Miles is Professor of Computing Education at the University of Roehampton, where he runs the secondary PGCE in computing course, teaches on the University's digital media and social science research methods and is a member of the University's AI working group. Prior to joining Roehampton, he spent 18 years in four schools, much of the time as an ICT coordinator and most recently as a head teacher.
Over the years he has contributed to a number of computing related projects including England's national curriculum computing programmes of study and Ofsted guidance. He gave evidence to the House of Lords AI select committee, was an expert advisor to the US-based A14K12 project, has supported Georgian universities in developing academic integrity policies, and chairs the National Centre for Computing Education's academic board.
Miles' talk addresses the incorporation of AI in the English computing curriculum, aligning with educational objectives like problem-solving and creative project engagement. It discusses the foundations, applications, and implications of generative AI like GTP-4, and its integration in schools.
Key points include the potential end of traditional programming, replaced by AI-driven code generations, and the important of adapting teaching methods to this new paradigm. The role of non-cognitive skills in AI education, like motivation and resilience, is highlighted. Ethical considerations, such as academic integrity in using AI tools like ChatGTP, and broader implications like fairness, privacy, and the need to keep humans in the loop in automated processes, are also discussed.
The presentation concludes by examining the balance between AI's ease of use and the importance of maintaining challenging, human-centric learning experiences.
