Unit xx. Neural networks – I’m a machine learning engineer
Details
This unit is planned but development has not yet started. Our plans may change in the future as we continue to review our scheme of learning.
Unit description
Understanding the principles of computational models inspired by the human brain.
Unit career
I’m a machine learning engineer
“As a machine learning engineer, I design and develop algorithms that enable computers to learn from and make predictions or decisions based on data. This involves working with large datasets, training models, and fine-tuning algorithms to achieve optimal performance. My goal is to create intelligent systems that can solve complex problems and improve over time with more data.”
Key Question
All the activities in this unit enable students to answer the key question:
How do interconnected artificial neurons learn from data to recognise patterns and make decisions like a simplified brain?
Knowledge statements
This is achieved by students studying 4 “Learn-it” lessons, each of which focus on one knowledge statement:
- Know how a neuron works.
- E.g. inputs, a bias, a threshold and a single output. Given an input stimulus there is either an output or not.
- Know that a neural network combines many neurons like the human brain to process information and make decisions.
- Know the principles of back propagation to enable the network to learn.
- Know the applications of neural networks.
What is included in this unit?
- Teacher guide providing a detailed overview of the unit.
- 6 Lesson folders:
- 4 “Learn-it” lessons with a teacher PowerPoint and student workbook.
- 1 “Make-it” lesson with assessment materials for teachers and students.
- 1 “Review-it” lesson with an end of topic MCQ test, assessment grid, peer assessment and self-reflection.
- Any additional resources and materials needed for the activities are provided in the lesson folders.
- 6 detailed lesson plans explaining how to teach the 3 lesson phases.
- Extension activities with model answers.
- 3 independent homework question sheets supported by 3 online videos hosted on Tella.
