Details
This unit is planned but development has not yet started. Our plans may change in the future as we continue to review our scheme of learning.
Unit description
Understanding how to organise, and retrieve files. Including a knowledge of extensions, how to compress and take backups of work.
Unit career
I’m a digital archivist
“As a digital archivist, I understand how to save, organize, and retrieve files. This includes knowing the benefits and limitations of storage services/servers, compression, backups, and file extensions/types. My goal is to efficiently manage and preserve digital information for easy access and long-term storage.”
Key Question
All the activities in this unit enable students to answer the key question:
How do we organise, store, and protect our files so they stay accessible, efficient to use, and safe from loss?
Knowledge statements
This is achieved by students studying 4 “Learn-it” lessons, each of which focus on one knowledge statement:
- Know that using appropriate filenames and folders makes them easier to find later, and that files have a file format associating them with an application.
- E.g. docx, gdoc, xlsx, gsheet, pptx, gslides, pdf & zip.
- Know what is meant by local and remote (cloud) files.
- E.g. file manager, OneDrive etc.
- Know how to compress and uncompress files to maximise storage space.
- E.g. using “compress to” built into the operating system.
- Know the importance of taking regular backups to prevent data loss even for remote files.
