Unit xx. Data science – I’m a data visualiser
Details
This unit is planned but development has not yet started. Our plans may change in the future as we continue to review our scheme of learning.
Unit description
Analysing, interpreting and visualising real and large data sets in innovative and meaningful ways. Looking for patterns in data with basic data mining techniques.
Unit career
I’m a data visualiser
“As a data visualiser, I turn raw data into visualisations. This involves collecting, analysing and interpreting data through mining techniques to find relationships between variables that are not obvious. I present patterns in large data sets in innovative and meaningful ways.”
Key Question
All the activities in this unit enable students to answer the key question:
How do we use data to uncover meaningful patterns and communicate insights that help people make informed decisions?
Knowledge statements
This is achieved by students studying 4 “Learn-it” lessons, each of which focus on one knowledge statement:
- Know how to work with large data sets in a spreadsheet for analysis.
- Know how to find patterns in data using basic data mining techniques.
- E.g. women who buy unscented lotion, calcium supplements and larger quantities of cotton balls are more likely to be pregnant and can be targets for advertisements.
- Know how to create visualisations beyond charts that communicate data innovatively and effectively.
- E.g. the size of a country on a map based on population not location and global sea levels expressed as heights of waves.
- Know how data science helps organisations make informed decisions by providing valuable insights from raw data.
- E.g. where items are placed in supermarkets & the use of royalty cards for data collection and mining.
